Discernment Counselling

Making a Decision About Your Marriage?

If you are feeling uncertain about your marriage, whether you are contemplating divorce or wondering if there’s a chance for reconciliation, you are not alone.  Many couples find themselves in this difficult spot, unsure of what direction to take. That’s where Discernment Counselling comes in.

What is Discernment Counselling?

Discernment Counselling is a unique and supportive process that helps couples in the midst of a relationship crisis decide whether they want to work on their marriage or move towards divorce.  It is not marriage therapy, but rather a short-term process designed to give you and your partner the space to reflect, understand each other better, and make a clear, confident decision about the future.

How It Works

Typically, Discernment Counselling involves a few sessions (up to 5 sessions) where you and your partner will come together to talk about the challenges you are facing.  You will each get a chance to share your thoughts and feelings in a safe, neutral space.  We will also meet with each of you individually to explore your personal perspectives, fears, and hopes for the future.

Our goal is simple: by the end of this process, you will have a clearer idea of whether you want to stay married and work on the relationship, or if you are ready to move forward with divorce.  This is not about making any immediate decisions, but about giving you both the time and insight you need to choose the next step with confidence.

What to Expect

We will talk through what each of you would need to feel more hopeful about your relationship and what the future might look like.  We will help you understand whether you are both willing to put in the effort to repair the marriage or if it is time to let go.

Why Choose Discernment Counselling?

If you are feeling stuck between staying and leaving, Discernment Counselling can help you make a decision without the pressure of having to immediately commit to saving the marriage.  It gives you space to reflect and get honest about what is working, what is not, and what you truly want.

It is not about fixing everything right away or pushing for a quick decision, but about helping you both understand your own feelings and the choices ahead.
