Ambivalence – The Uneasy but Necessary Emotion in Divorce Deliberations

Feeling uncertain or anxious is common for couples considering divorce. This decision is tough because it involves choosing between two difficult options: staying in the marriage or moving on. Couples often hope for change or relief but struggle with their emotions.

In therapy, professionals face challenges like deciding between divorce or marital therapy, and whether to hold joint or individual sessions. They need to understand the couple’s underlying issues and consider the impact on any children involved.

Therapists should normalize these feelings of uncertainty and use their observations to help clients make clearer decisions. Regardless of whether they choose to stay together or part ways, clients will need to adjust to changes. Ambivalence may persist, but with time and growth, hope and normalcy can be restored.
